At SU, promoting multilingualism is very important.
Vriende van Afrikaans, the Language Centre and the residence Academia therefore joined forces to launch the project “Fill up with a boerewors roll and fill a book chest,” for which they have been selling tickets for boerewors rolls since early in February. The project aimed at raising funds to donate book chests valued at R7 500 each to primary schools. The book chests contain easy readers in Afrikaans, Engels and isiXhosa, and could serve as mobile libraries at schools without libraries.
On Friday 10 March – the day of the boerewors rolls – the guys from Academia lit the fires early on. The wors sizzled on the fire and the many bread rolls were buttered vigorously. The braised onions that one of the Language Centre colleagues added to the mix was a total hit. Ticket holders collected their boerewors rolls in a walk-through fashion at 7 Bosman Street between 13:00 and 14:00.
Everyone involved enjoyed the project tremendously. On Friday afternoon, tired but happy students and staff members went home knowing that they helped a school to get a book chest – filled with lovely books for little minds to read.
Up to now, the project yielded two book chests: one donated by Academia’s students and management, and one donated by Vriende van Afrikaans, since this organisation undertook to match each book chest resulting from the project. Together with sponsorships from Dagbreek residence and MGD (Matie Community Service), an additional R4 434 was raised, which will be augmented later by another boerewors roll event to provide even more schools with book chests. It doesn’t stop here, either. The team plans more projects to benefit schools, the first of which will be sessions where books will be read to learners.
