Looking back over the past ten years we must thank our enthusiastic Language Centre team for all their hard work and dedication. As an institution involved in language planning we have managed to build something really worthwhile.
Following a humble start in 2002 we can now boast with impact figures such as these: more than 2 200 students in credit-bearing language modules in various faculties, 3 800 students who receive consultations each year, more than 1 200 postgraduate students being helped in 60 workshops per year, hundreds of corporate and public clients that receive training in workshops and other services, a wide variety of clients that utilise our language services, trilingual terminologies in a variety of subject fields, and much more.
In this anniversary year the focus will be on new initiatives (and less on partying!). Earlier this year we launched an Afrikaans reading programme (called Dinklees met ’n Plan); we have already started a lecture series on language planning and support with Prof Vic Webb as our first speaker a few weeks ago; we are busy with the planning process to establish a reading lab; and we will hold a symposium on the advancement of African languages later this year. Furthermore we have a community project on the way and we have held a successful writing marathon – just to mention a few of the projects and activities.
Thank you to all our associates and clients for the incredible collaboration that we enjoyed throughout our first decade of service. Without these inputs and wonderful relationships, we could not have accomplished anything.
