We’re sharing two short videos of our former colleague Pumlani Sibula on this page, as a tribute to him and his love of teaching isiXhosa. Also visit our Wall of Remembrance for Pumlani.
A Language Centre colleague, Faika Haroun, has extracted some video material of Pumlani sharing the gift of isiXhosa to compile this short video tribute to him:
A thirty-second snippet of Pumlani teaching isiXhosa at a SATI Western Cape meeting in 2018:
Date: 3 February 2021 Subject line: Podcast translation to support multilingual online learning
Dear Colleague
On behalf of the Language Centre: welcome back and best wishes for 2021!
Moreover, we’d like to remind you that, by translating recordings of your lectures, the Language Centre’s Interpreting Service is ready to help you ensure that your students have easy access to online lectures in more than one language.
In these times of augmented emergency remote teaching and learning, our podcast translation service proves to be exceptionally convenient and valuable. We can deliver a 25-minute lecture recording as a translated podcast within approximately three working days: in English or Afrikaans (and, where applicable, in isiXhosa), ready for you to upload to SUNLearn for your students.
In this way –
you adhere to the requirements of the SU Language Policy;
you save time, since you don’t have to record everything twice;
students have access to content in Afrikaans and English (and in isiXhosa, where applicable); and
you can work with professional, experienced educational interpreters at SU.
To prevent a bottleneck, we’d like to ask that you send us your lecture recordings as you complete them. Please don’t wait until the last minute – we need time to do preparation, translation, post-production and quality control for each podcast. Use www.wetransfer.com to send the files to christinejoubert@sun.ac.za (these files are too large to send via regular e-mail). We have included an infographic that further explains these steps. You can also click here to see an example of our work – this is just a small teaser of the more than 1 250 recordings we have made since lockdown in 2020!
To make sure that we are on the same page, an interpreter will contact you before the start of the first term to schedule a short conversation on MS Teams.
We will talk soon. Good luck with your preparations for the academic year.
Kind regards
The Language Centre’s Interpreting Service
