This course is practical and interactive, and we incorporate real-life scenarios to encourage the use of authentic language. We will focus specifically on speaking, listening and reading isiXhosa. You will be able to use isiXhosa to take part in basic conversations related to everyday life. This course is aimed at members of the public.

Presenter

Jana Nel is a lecturer at the Education Faculty, Stellenbosch University, where she trains all student teachers to learn isiXhosa as a language of conversational competence. She is an enthusiastic and passionate lecturer and believes that by learning an African language like isiXhosa you are enabling yourself to connect with your fellow South Africans on a deeper level.

Location

All sessions will be offered in Stellenbosch at the University campus.

After having completed the course successfully, you will be able to do the following in isiXhosa:

  • Greet and introduce yourself
  • Provide basic personal information
  • Ask and respond to basic questions
  • Have a basic conversation with other isiXhosa-speaking individuals
  • Communicate socially on a basic level
  • Use basic vocabulary related to everyday life

We present this course over a period of eight weeks.
Face-to-face contact time = 18 hours
Online activities = 12 hours
9:00–11:30

The face-to-face time includes authentic and interactive language-use activities that give participants the opportunity to practise isiXhosa in real-life situations and also go on outings related to the theme of the week. This is supplemented with online support and activities.

You should preferably have access to a computer and the internet for the online part of the course. You’ll also need basic computer skills.

This course is aimed at members of the public. Non-mother tongue speakers of isiXhosa who would like to be able to converse in basic isiXhosa should register for this fun and interactive language course.

A certificate of competence will be awarded will be awarded after you’ve completed the course successfully.

The ability to communicate in multiple languages is becoming more important in the increasingly integrated global community, but especially in our culturally diverse country. As a result, we need to foster an environment that promotes multilingual learning to ensure that we are able to successfully communicate with those around us. When you can speak basic isiXhosa, you will be able to connect to more people.

The course cost is R5 580 per participant. This includes all course material, refreshments and outings in and around town.
