Facilitator
Helga Sykstus is a seasoned lecturer with more than 20 years’ experience of teaching Afrikaans as an additional language to students and clients from all over the world. She is a passionate lecturer who enjoys sharing her love for language and culture. Her enthusiasm for language teaching equips her to create a positive and supportive learning environment.
Location
All sessions will be offered online via MS Teams.
After having completed the course successfully, you will be able to do the following in Afrikaans:
- Greet and introduce yourself
- Provide basic personal information
- Ask and respond to basic questions
- Have a basic conversation with other Afrikaans-speaking individuals
- Communicate socially on a basic level
- Use basic vocabulary related to everyday life
This short course is presented online over a period of 8 weeks.
Online contact time: 20 hours (2½ hours per week)
Online activities: 10 hours (1 hour per week of autonomous learning)

Topic 4: Social interaction
Topic 5: In and around town
Participants must be able to attend online via MS Teams, preferably via a computer, laptop or tablet, as participation via a smart phone is not ideal. Access to internet, Wi-Fi and mobile data are therefore also essential.
This course is aimed at members of the public. Non-mother tongue speakers of Afrikaans who would like to be able to have conversations in basic Afrikaans should register for this fun and interactive language course.

A certificate of competence will be awarded will be awarded after you’ve completed the course successfully.
The ability to communicate in multiple languages is becoming more important in the increasingly integrated global community, but especially in our culturally diverse country. As a result, we need to foster an environment that promotes multilingual learning to ensure that we are able to successfully communicate with those around us. When you can speak basic Afrikaans, you will be able to connect to more people.
The course cost is R4 200 per participant. This includes all course material, refreshments and outings in and around town.
