If you work with Deaf colleagues, the public, or parents of Deaf children with a beginner’s knowledge of SASL, this 10-week course is ideal. Building on the foundations laid in the SASL A1 course, the A2 course offers further insights into the linguistic and cultural norms of SASL as a language, and into Deaf culture. We will also delve deeper into the grammar of SASL. You will practise the language using our online video material and work in pairs or small groups.

Presenters

Susan (Modiegi) Njeyiyana is a Deaf poet and academic who recently obtained her master’s in linguistics. Her first poem was ‘June 16th’, followed by ‘Bear Wash Day’, and her poetry inspired many Deaf poets to explore new ideas. Her creativity also exposed Deaf children to poetry and storytelling in their own language. Susan is currently a lecturer at Stellenbosch University and teaches South African Sign Language Acquisition as additional language to hearing students.

The face-to-face sessions will take place from 09:00 to 12:00 in the Seminar Room of the Language Centre, Kleine Bosch, 44 Banhoek Road, Stellenbosch.

This dynamic course will continue exploring the world of South African Sign Language (SASL). Building on the foundations laid in the SASL A1 course, the A2 course offers further insights into the linguistic and cultural norms of SASL as a language, and into Deaf culture. In this course we will delve deeper into the grammar of SASL.

You will practise the language using our online video material and work in pairs or small groups. Certain sessions will be facilitated with by SASL interpreting, and course material is available in English.

By the end of this 10-week course, you should be able to:

engage in short conversations on familiar topics using SASL
use appropriate signs, facial expressions and body language to convey meaning
understand and respond to basic questions and statements in SASL
demonstrate the production and reception of the one-hand finger-spelling alphabet, accurately produce and recognise finger-spelled words, and use finger-spelling to clarify names, places and other specific terms
demonstrate an understanding of the cultural and linguistic aspects of the Deaf community, show respect for Deaf culture and norms, and understand the importance of SASL in the Deaf community
apply SASL in everyday situations and simple transactions, and use SASL to communicate in contexts such as shopping, asking for directions and discussing daily routines.

Our courses combine face-to-face sessions, facilitated by the course presenter, with self-directed online learning.

Short courses open before the face-to-face sessions and closes well after the last face-to-face session. This allows enough time for you to activate your SUNOnline presence before the first face-to-face session takes place.

The 10 face-to-face sessions will take place in the Seminar Room of the Language Centre, Kleine Bosch, 44 Banhoek Road, Stellenbosch from 14:00 to 16:00 on the following dates:

During this course, you will spend your time as follows (this may vary for individuals):

weekly face-to-face sessions of two hours each
about six hours per week of self-paced reading and completing tasks, activities, and assignments

Face-to-face: 10 sessions of 2 hours per session, held weekly on the above dates

You will need a computer and a reliable web browser to access learning material on SUNOnline. You should be familiar with creating electronic documents.

Having successfully completed the SASL Beginner Level A1 course is a prerequisite for attending the course. If you have completed a beginner course elsewhere, you will need to do an oral assessment before placement.

If you would like to learn more about South African Sign Language and you already have beginner’s knowledge of the language, this course is for you! To ensure optimal learning, we limit the number of participants.

You need to attend the face-to-face sessions and complete the given assignments and assessments. After having attended the course, and successfully completing the assessments, you will receive a certificate of competence.
